Jacqueline Weir, Girlguiding Ulster volunteer was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty the Queen in honour of her inspirational volunteering efforts with Girlguiding Ulster supporting girls and young women over the last 45 years. She has also been recognised for her work with the school governorship, her church and the wider community.

Jacqueline first became involved in guiding when she joined as a Brownie then Guide and continuing to take up a leader role in 1973 in 41st Belfast Guide unit and has provided amazing opportunities for girls and young women over many years.

Jacqueline has held many roles over the years in guiding including Guide and Senior Section Advisor, District and Division roles, Belfast County Commissioner and Ulster Deputy Chief Commissioner in 2002.

.

Jacqueline is also a member of the Girlguiding UK quality board. Providing support to Girlguiding leaders and equipping them with the skills and knowledge to provide a high-quality programme to our members.

Jacqueline continues her work with Girlguiding Ulster as a Leader of 41st Belfast Guide Unit, Division Commissioner and a Ulster Trainer Coordinator helping the girls grow in confidence, learning new skills and making life-long friends.

Jacqueline says: “Through Girlguiding, young women get to build confidence and resilience – resilience is something young people need to cope with what is a very different world, with all the issues of mental health and well-being. They also learn to be good citizens and play a role in their community as they grow up.”

Jacqueline is absolutely delighted to receive the MBE. “It is a lovely honour and the fact that people felt they could nominate me means a lot. People have said a lot of lovely things over the past few days.”

Jacqueline is now looking forward to a trip to Buckingham Palace later this year to receive her award.

In her role as a Guide Leader Jacqueline has helped, inspired and supported hundreds of girls over the years, giving them opportunities to try new and exciting activities as well as develop life skills and have fun. Jacqueline is also a Division Commissioner in Belfast and the Training Coordinator for Girlguiding Ulster; in these roles Jacqueline encourages and supports volunteers and leads the training team. Jacqueline is a very committed member of Girlguiding Ulster and I am thrilled that such a friendly, hardworking, helpful and enthusiastic ambassador for guiding has been awarded an MBE.”
